THE Midhurst and Petworth Rotary Club has crowned the winner in the first round of its 2014 young photographer competition.
The first round was held at Midhurst Rother College (MRC) with the theme ‘People’.
The winner was talented MRC student Oliver Van Zwanenberg.
He said of the inspiration for his photographs: “They were inspired by the people of a small village in Tanzania.
“These photos were taken to capture something of their culture.
“They have different climate, language, wealth and beliefs, but through the lens I came to realise that the basic human traits aren’t so unfamiliar to ours.”
Oliver now takes his winning images through to the senior section of the Rotary District Final.
Keen snapper Oliver often takes pictures of events around the area which feature in the Observer.
Intermediate entrant Erin Boxall also goes through to the next round.
Thanks go to sponsor, judge and local photographer Michael Chevis, judge Steve Morley, who is also a professional photographer, and the third judge, past Midhurst Grammar School pupil Sophie May-Lewis who is now a part time professional photographer.
