Shake up at Chichester District Council

A NEW chairman was appointed to Chichester District Council this week – Chichester West’s Martin Bell.

He took over the reigns from Peter Clementson who had been chairman of the council for two years.

“It is a great privilege to serve as chairman,” said Cllr Bell.

“Thank you all for voting for me. Peter is going to be a hard act to follow but I will do my very best.”

Cllr Clementson thanked the ‘two ladies in my life’, the personal assistant to the chairman Jane Polden, and his wife, Jane.

“PA to the chairman, Jane, this will be her last day of that role after eight years.

“She has got an amazing ability to manage, – she could fix anything.

“The other lady is my wife, and I am so pleased that she had been able to join me in so many of the events and functions that we have been to in the last two years.

“She has gone out in all weathers, on Sundays, goodness knows what. Jane, thank you so much.”

Heather Caird, leader of the council, also thanked Cllr Clementson for his work over the past two years as chairman.

Nick Thomas, of the Plaistow ward, was elected as vice chairman of the council, as Graham Hicks stepped down after six years in the role.

The changes were made at a full council meeting on Tuesday, May 21.
