RESIDENTS in Petworth had a shock when they discovered a large ‘sinkhole’ at the bottom of their road.

A large crack appeared at the bottom of Orchard Close, and days later, the crack had become a ‘crater’.

Orchard Close resident Maggie Ferrari said: “In our cul-de-sac, right in front of our bin area, a large sink hole suddenly opened up.

“It has a diameter of about eight feet and luckily no-one was walking or driving over it when it suddenly appeared.

“The council have put guard rails around it, but someone has put a sign on it reading ‘Please make sure our hedgehog, who has just woken from hibernation, doesn’t fall in’, but how one is supposed to prevent that I have no idea.”

Andrew Cluer returned from holiday to find the huge hole in the ground behind his home.

In our cul-de-sac, right in front of our bin area, a large sink hole suddenly opened up. It has a diameter of about eight feet and luckily no-one was walking or driving over it when it suddenly appeared.

He said: “This has been a continual problem.

“I think it’s the third time it has happened.”

The road is the responsibility of the West Sussex County Council (WSCC) highways department.

A spokesman for WSCC said: “The hole has been made safe by fencing the area off. We hope work to carry out repairs will be completed by end of the week.”
