A SECOND year of wet summer weather on Sussex Day saw Petworth’s yearly rendition of Sussex by the Sea take place indoors on Sunday (June 16).
Town crier Mike Hubbard led the singing in St Mary’s church, after a number of elderly singers voted to go inside.
“The acoustics were better in the church,” said Mike afterwards.
Even the church organist provided an accompaniment for the singers.
“Halfway through Sussex by the Sea, he joined in with the music,” added Mike.
The hope is that next year June sunshine will allow the rendition to take place outside, following a second damp day for the celebration.
“Last year jt was hailing and there was a gale and every time I got to singing, my hat blew off,” said Mike.
This is the fifth or sixth time Mike has been town crier for the rendition. He reads out the Sussex Charter and then leads the singing.
