THE annual Jack’s Sponsored Walk organised by the Petworth Royal British Legion in aid of the Poppy Appeal takes place this year on October 4 in the Duncton area.
The walk will start at 9.30am from The Cricketers Pub in Duncton and return there for lunch afterwards.
Once again the route has been planned by John Rosser and covers around seven miles. All ages, individuals, teams and dogs are welcome.
The walk is a lasting tribute to Jack Holloway, a Burma Star veteran, who initiated it in 1998 in aid of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and who had raised more than £30,000 by the time he died in 2011.
Ian McNeil, Petworth Poppy Appeal organiser, said: “The centenary of the first world war, so movingly commemorated in the current exhibition at All Hallows’ Church in Tillington where Jack lived, makes it a special year for the Royal British Legion, bringing home very vividly how much we owe to Jack and the many others affected by this and subsequent wars.”
