A WILDLIFE trust is holding a photography competition to raise funds for the care of hedgehogs.
Brent Lodge Bird Wildlife Trust, in Cow Lane, Sidlesham, has launched the competition to raise awareness of the plight of wildlife in the Sussex and Hampshire areas.
In particular, the trust wants to raise awareness of the plight of hedgehogs with numbers reaching dangerously low levels nationally.
Every year the trust cares for between 450 and 500 hedgehogs, some of which are sent to foster homes.
Danny Dawes, from the trust, said he particularly wanted to raise awareness of hedgehogs during October, dubbed HOG-tober, because their numbers are ‘dwindling at an alarming rate’.
“There were over 36 million in the 1960s and, according to a recent survey, they are now down to approximately 900,000 across the UK,” he said.
“It is estimated they will be gone by 2020.
“We here at Brent Lodge Wildlife Trust have approximately 400 to 500 boarding with us over the winter as they are too small to survive but we need huge amounts of help for their food bill as they eat a tin of dog food each everyday.”

The closing date for entries October 20 and the winner will receive a family ticket to the New Forest Wildlife Park.
