MIDHURST town councillors look set to back another call for measures to fight the menace of the sat-nav in the historic centre of the town where ancient buildings are constantly suffering damage.
A pressure group headed by the Midhurst Society and John Trueman, editor of the online town promotion service Midhurst Pages wants a bold black and yellow sign installed at the junction of Chichester Road and New Road warning drivers not to follow their sat-nav systems.
They say recently installed width restriction signs need back-up warnings until sat-nav companies update their instructions.
Town councillors have in the past opposed schemes which bring more signage to the town.
But after looking at the original proposal vice chairman of the town John Quilter echoed the sentiments of fellow councillors when he said he believed they merited their support.
He said he did not want to see the town cluttered with signs but he believed the town council should put its weight behind them for a trial period.
And on Monday chairman of the Midhurst Society Sheila Ryan went back to town councillors to ask them to support a second measure, the erection of another sign, this time at the entrance to West Street near its junction with the mini roundabout.
She said this was an attempt to stop lorries coming down the A272 and following their sat-navs straight across the roundabout into West Street and then trying to make the difficult turn right into South Street at a very narrow junction.
Mr Quilter said a sign on the mini roundabout would distract drivers but he suggested placing a warning further up the A272 Petersfield Road where it would be read before drivers reached the roundabout.
This proposal will be put to a full meeting of the council.
