There was traffic chaos in Midhurst yesterday evening (Sunday, May 19) when two vehicles collided blocking North Mill Bridge for more than an hour.
The emergency services were called to the bridge just before 5pm as large crowds were leaving the polo match at neighbouring Cowdray Park.
The accident blocked the main A286 through Midhurst and police were forced to set up diversions.
Nigel Gamblen, station officer at Midhurst, told the Observer a Range Rover was in collision with a car on the bridge.
“The car swivelled and its back end knocked and moved some of the big coping stones on the bridge.”
The driver of the 4x4 was unhurt but the elderly man driving the car received neck injuries and had to be cut out of his vehicle by fire fighters using specialist hydraulic equipment. His passenger, an elderly woman suffered chest injuries.
Both were taken to St Richards Hospital by ambulance.
