PETWORTH historian Miles Costello will be speaking on Two Petworth Murders at a special event organised by the Petworth Society.
It is the second of three Garland Memorial Lectures in celebration of 21 years of the society’s quarterly magazine which has been acclaimed as an outstanding publication of its kind.
Mr Costello’s lecture centres on the two 19th-century murders in the town.
It takes place at The Leconfield Hall, in the centre of Petworth, starting at 7.30pm on Monday, November 12.
There will be a £1 entry free for all who attend to pay for refreshments, but otherwise the event is free.
It is being sponsored by Austens Home Hardware, of Market Square, Petworth.
The third celebratory lecture will take place on December 3 when Petworth Society chairman Peter Jerrome will speak about the history of Petworth Fair.
Mr Jerrome also gave the first of the series of three celebratory lectures when he charted the beginnings of the society’s magazine from its inception as a bulletin in 1974.
It began life as an annual report of local interest, but material was hard to come by.
Mr Jerrome then began to contribute local history articles but it was when he persuaded older members of the community to talk about their childhoods and working lives, the renamed Petworth Society Magazine really took off.
