Uncertain future for the Ship Inn, South Harting after last orders called

THE Ship Inn at South Harting faces an uncertain future after news that time has been called.

Landlord Cliff Parry said: “I believe the chances of it reopening again as a pub are very slight.”

Mr Parry, who took over the tenancy in 2010 after it had had a series of managers, has been given notice to quit by owners the Wellington Pub Company.

He said the pub had been sold to property developers: “Initially they were going to run it as a pub, possibly with me taking the lease or tenancy,” said Mr Parry.

“But when they had a structural survey carried out of the property they found so much needed doing to it that it probably would not be allowed to open as a commercial undertaking and so they decided in their wisdom to close it down on the completion date which is next Wednesday.”

Mr Parry added: “I have been told it will be closed for at least six months and whether it opens up as a pub again is a matter of conjecture.”
