Van catches fire in Midhurst - Blaze was spreading to car and nearby building

Firefighters were called to an industrial estate in Midhurst after a van caught fire on Friday night (January 29).

A van was found 'well alight' on the Wedglen Industrial Estate just before 10pm, according to West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.

The fire service said the blaze was spreading to a car and the facia of a nearby building, as retained firefighters from Midhurst Fire Station were mobilised to the scene.

A spokesperson added: “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly brought the fire under control using one high pressure hose reel and a fog nail.

“They remained at the scene damping down the area and used a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no further hotspots before booking away from the incident at 10.48pm.

Sussex Police have been informed.”

Police confirmed the fire was ‘deemed to be accidental’. 

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “Around 10.50pm on Friday (January 29), police were called by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service in relation to a van fire near Station Road, Midhurst.

“The fire was deemed to be accidental, but those present were concerned about the behaviour of a man in the vicinity. Officers attended but the person had since left the area.”
