VIDEO: 60 years of Martlet morris

A ‘HEARTWARMING’ performance saw around 200 morris dancers from all over the country gather to celebrate a 60th anniversary.

In 1953, Chichester’s Martlet Sword and Morris Men were formed and one of the founding members led the 60th birthday extravaganza.

“Dancing outside the cathedral was the highlight,” said Peter North, the Martlet’s squire, who was just 21 when he helped form the group – and is still dancing aged 81.

“It was nice to get all the teams together.

“We’ve had so many compliments from visitors saying how much they enjoyed it and how much they enjoyed being in Chichester.”

The Chichester team was joined by 14 teams from across the country, including Yorkshire, Devon and Suffolk.

“They came a long way and danced a display dance right on the cathedral lawn – a beautiful spot.

“It was heartwarming to see,” he said.

A large crowd watched the performance in the sun on Saturday.

The 14 groups had split into three tours which danced through the area earlier in the day, from Littlehampton in the east to Havant in the west, all congregating on the cathedral green.
