HEAVY rainfall over the past 12 months has left farmers in the Observer area suffering.
Farmer Nick Baird is the director of Basil Baird (Fareham) Ltd and chairman of the Chichester branch of the National Farmers’ Union.
He farms potatoes, wheat and potatoes on 2,900 acres around the area and he said it has been a really tough year because of the wet weather.
“The last year has been very bad for farming, the weather has been terrible since the end of last April,” he said.
He said the potato crop had been badly affected, with much of the crop rotting away, and low temperatures this spring mean the wheat has been very slow in growing.
