More than 20 torch bearers will carry the Olympic flame through the Midhurst and Petworth area on Monday (July 16) and yet only five of them live here.
Now, community leaders from Petworth, Midhurst and Easebourne have expressed their disappointment and hit out at the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) for inadequate publicity on how to nominate torch bearers.
When the flames arrives in Midhurst, the closest resident carrying it will be 35-year-old Emma Johnston Jones from Billingshurst while others hale from as far away as Leer in Germany.
The four torch bearers from Easebourne come from Germany, Farnham, Basingstoke and Shoreham.
While at Petworth torch bearers are from Munich, Portsmouth, West Chiltington and Steyning.
Juliet Fynes told fellow members of Petworth Town Council: “It’s a pity no one from Petworth is carrying it through the town.”
She said she had been unaware of the process to nominate torchbearers from Petworth and believed it could have been better advertised. “We never had the chance to vote for someone from Petworth, it would have been nice to have known how to do about it.”
