Residents at Pendean House Nursing Home, in West Lavington, are taking a walk on the wild side in a bid to attract more wildlife into the care home’s grounds and gardens.

Bupa’s Wildlife Week, from May 7-13, will see staff and residents enjoying a week of special activities, focusing on helping boost the house sparrow population.

As well as encouraging the local community to join their ‘Save the Sparrow’ campaign, Pendean House Nursing Home is calling on volunteers to lend a hand during the week to help create a sparrow-friendly garden.

The project is being backed by the RSPB, with care homes across the UK linking up with the wildlife charity to receive expert support and advice about the best ways to create wildlife havens for species that are currently in decline.

Care home manager, Jackie Travers, said: “We have plenty happening during Wildlife Week for residents and visitors to enjoy, from setting up our special nesting boxes through to making sure the sparrows have what they need to keep their chicks alive this summer.

“It’s a great way for our residents to appreciate the fresh air or enjoy a spot of bird watching, and for those who may not be as active, simply drawing attention to any wildlife around them can help reminiscence and trigger happy memories.”
