Windsurfers brave '˜ferocious' Storm Doris at West Wittering

While most were battening down the hatches as Storm Doris struck, a group of hardy windsurfers and kitesurfers braved winds of between 40 and 60 knots at West Wittering beach.

Windsurfers from the 2XS club Simon Bassett and Adrian West from Itchenor were joined by Paul Hatton and kitesurfer Stu Mahoney.

Simon said: “The sunny weather made it feel good out there but the ferocious gusts and heavy chop felt like you were riding a rodeo bull on the water – it was out of control but fun.”

The adenaline-enthusiasts togged up in thick winter wetsuits and boots to keep the cold temperatures at bay and said that water conditions were very choppy and rough and strong gusts made it tough to control the speed on the water.

In a separate incident, Selsey Coastguard responded to a call that a windsurfer had got into difficulty during the storm at Bracklesham Beach.
