VISITORS to the countryside around Midhurst may be lucky enough to meet the two newest members of the National Trust Woolbeding Countryside Team.

Mayfield Captain 3rd, or Captain for short, is a russet-coloured pedigree Sussex bull, and Hillfield Expo, otherwise known as Expo, is a handsome black and white pedigree Belted Galloway bull.

Captain comes from a breeder in Mayfield, and is a placid soul who likes nothing better than a good scratch.

He can currently be found on Harting Down where he is helping the rest of the herd keep the invasive scrub at bay so that the beautiful downland flowers can flourish.

Expo comes from a small herd in Norfolk, and his main job is to ensure that the Belted Galloway ‘girls’ are all in calf by the end of the summer.

Stockman Rob Groves said: “These bulls make a welcome addition to our existing stock numbers and will enable us to have calves born throughout the year, which can then provide quality meat for local businesses all year round.

“We are extremely pleased with our new boys, and we hope our visitors enjoy seeing them grazing across all our sites as much as we do.”

Sussex cattle are a large, majestic and incredibly docile breed, making them ideally suited to an area with many visitors, such as Harting Down.
