FERNHURST Recreation Ground used its first open day to showcase all its sports clubs and amenities.

Over the past four years the recreation ground, bought by public subscription collected in the village in 1941, has been vastly improved.

Three state-of-the-art tennis courts have been constructed, a new flat football pitch has been built, the pavilion has been refurbished, permanent cricket nets with a bowling machine are well under way, and a new equipment and tractor shed has been built.

It is hoped more football teams will be formed with the launch of the new facilities, and cricket, stoolball and tennis players will use the centre as a hub for their chosen sport.

The newest sport to use the pavilion is a bicycle club which attracts racers for road cycling and mountain biking, and they train indoors in the winter.

A new project is the Fernhurst Golf Club which is open to anyone in the village or anyone who has played for the village at any sport. Members plan to play at different courses in the area a few times a year with a lunch afterwards.

There are also two thriving bridge clubs which play in the evening and the Fernhurst in Training group which plans to meet regularly to use the expertise of a personal trainer on site.

All the groups came along to showcase what activities they have to offer in the pavilion.

Many residents came along to find out what the recreation ground had to offer, and organisers said it was a successful day.
