Crowds lined North Street in Midhurst on Bank Holiday Monday (August 27) for the grand procession on the final day of the nine-day MADhurst festival.

They were rewarded with a real spectacle as more floats than ever before wound their way from Market Square to the afternoon’s fun at Cowdray Park.

Leading the procession was MADhurst’s own Ali Gibson, playing the trombone and fresh from the major success of his brass band concert accompanied by Dominic Singleton and Rachael Kerry.

They were followed by Concordia students, who had gathered from all over the world to help out during the festival.

They were holding the hearts made during the week’s workshops and which gave the procession it’s theme.

Procession coordinator for Midhurst Town Council and MADhurst, Steve Morley said: “It was gratifying to see so many people taking part in the procession - there were more floats, motorised and walking, than we have had before.

“It was great too, to see so many spectators who had turned out in force to enjoy the spectacle. This event is certainly growing and it really good to see the community of Midhurst getting together.”

Among the other floats this year were Rotherhill Nurseries from Stedham with their ‘heart of growing’ float covered in hearts entwined with foliage.

“I think the procession is brilliant,” said nursery owner David Burton.

“The atmosphere was fantastic and I couldn’t believe how many people had turned out to see us all go through the town.”

Cowdray Estate staff and families wowed the crowds with The Wizard of Oz, complete with Dorothy’s little dog Toto and the wicked witch of the west. Children from Caring Day Care taking part in their first procession, were aboard their very own Alice in Wonderland float.
