LETTER: Leadsom will have to lead

Have your say

I suspect that a ‘remainer’ started the story about Michael Gove stabbing Boris Johnson in the back, as they had repeatedly accused him of supporting Brexit to get the top job.

My own analysis is that as 70 per cent of Conservative MPs would only vote for Johnson if he was the only candidate, once Theresa May decided to enter the contest, a Brexiteer with similar ministerial experience (incidentally Boris has very little) would have to enter the fray and Michael Gove, who had officially led the campaign, was the obvious choice, however reluctant he was to take it on.

As we must, if possible, have someone who believes in what they will be tasked with (not Theresa May, who has not, to my mind, been a strong Home Secretary and supported remaining) Michael Gove or Andrea Leadsom (both of whom worked so hard for what they believe in) are the two candidates to be put forward as the next Prime Minister.

The recent attack on Michael Gove has made it difficult for him to win, so if Theresa May will not do the decent thing as a remainer and step back, the logical person to support is Andrea Leadsom and I hope the Conservative MPs will realise this and get on with the job of getting us out of the EU with excellent trading terms, plus quick acceptance of Commonwealth and EFTA member’s offers of trade agreements, which could double our economy if we can meet their orders and substitute their products for EU products which are certain to become more expensive.

Finally, I would like to thank Boris, Michael and Andrea for their outstanding performances in the recent referendum debates.
