Religion isn’t peace

IN REPLY to John Hutchings’ letter (February 23), his concept of a secular society is not in practice often as he purports, if he looks a short distance away to France he will find a secular society that permits religious freedom, but in all things associated with the state it is secular.

For example all state schools are secular but then religious schools are permitted and flourish.

France is often considered as a Catholic country but this depends on the area: some areas are mainly Protestant. In the past considerable friction existed between the Christian religions (Catholic/Protestant), leading to killing and fighting, so a religious state is not always a peaceful state to be in.
