Burgess Hill won the toss and had no hesitation in asking hosts and Sussex League division-three holders Pagham to bat on a wicket that was green after overnight rain.

The visitors had only nine men since both their opening bowlers were held up en route by a puncture and heavy traffic.

The Burgess Hill captain requested a delay in starting the match but this was turned down by the umpires. However the two stand-in opening bowlers, Peter Billingley and Karl Boffey, took advantage of the seaming wicket which saw Pagham quickly reduced to 15 for three.

This brought to the wicket Nilushan Nonis and Mike Hales, who both batted magnificently in putting on a fourth-wicket partnership of 221. Nonis finished with 126 not out and Hales 80 not out as Pagham declared after 47 overs on 236 for three.

The Burgess Hill batsmen found all the Pagham bowlers too much to handle and were dismissed for 96 giving Pagham a win by 140 runs.

Pete Cotterrill finished with three for 41, Wayne Green three for 14 and batting hero Nonis three for two. Pagham duly secured the 30 points and remain top.
