Favourites find festive favour at Fontwell

Five of the six favourites won as Fontwell Park hosted a bumper Boxing Day meeting - one year late.

After a heavy frost put paid to last year’s meeting, the first scheduled for the figure-of-eight course after a successful bid for the sought-after fixture, the weather couldn’t beat them this year.

And a crowd of thousands - the exact figure has yet to be revealed - packed into the course to enjoy some close jumps racing and a host of festive sideshows.

Unusually, five of the six races on the card went to the favourites - with the other going to the second favourite, making it a great day for the bookies if not a very profitable one for the punters.

The sheer size of the crowd meant pre-meeting traffic jams on the A27 and some race-goers would have missed the opening stages of the card.

Andrew Tinkler kicked things off by riding the 10/11 favourite Problema Tic to victory for trainer Nicky Henderson.

That was one of two winners tipped on this website. The other was 5/4 favourite Sawago in the 3.15, which Noel Fehily rode to victory for Sussex trainer Gary Moore.

Other trainers to taste success included a duo familiar to Fontwell race-goers - Tim Vaughan and Brendan Powell.
