ANDY AWFORD weighed up his Pompey options and promised: I know my best team.
The Blues boss is confident he knows his strongest Blues starting 11.
Awford has shuffled his pack in every game so far this season.
But he is adamant that doesn’t mean he isn’t aware of his most powerful side.
Awford said: ‘If we had an FA Cup final tomorrow and I had to pick my best players in a 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2 or 4-3-3, I’d be able to do it.
‘If we had a one-off game, I’d know what my best side was.’
Awford feels asking him to pick his best team oversimplifies his job as manager, however.
With a squad of 29 players, the 42-year-old knows he has to utilise his options for the campaign ahead.
He also pointed out the opposition, inevitably, plays a big part in considering his best 11.
That leads to the variety in his choices.
He said: ‘Picking your best team doesn’t work out like that, because you have to utilise your whole squad.
‘For certain games you look at who you are playing.
‘If you are the manager of Burnley in the Premier League do you want your full-backs to bomb on every week?
‘Or do you want someone who can scrap and defend for you?
‘Manchester City need two full-backs who can fly.
‘But if you are Burnley you are going to be defending a lot, so you need defenders who defend.
‘You need a different mix.
‘If we are playing like City I know who I’m picking, if we are playing like Burnley I know who I’m playing.
‘You need to look at the opposition.’
