Guy Whittingham has revealed his dressing room reaction to the York debacle.

The Pompey boss has told of how he dealt with the abject performance, as the Blues served up a shocker at Bootham Crescent last weekend.

Whittingham insisted he made it clear to his players in no uncertain terms that a display like that would not be tolerated.

It was a departure from the Blues manager’s usual measured approach.

Whittingham is keen to now draw a line under those events but made it clear his player’s efforts have to be put right moving forward.

He said: ‘Last Saturday was a day when I thought they needed a reaction – and they got a bit of a reaction.

‘I suppose I kicked off but I tried to make it controlled.

‘There were no tea-cups to throw around. You don’t get tea anymore!

‘But there are times when you need to do that, for sure, and I recognise that.

‘The players need to be left in no uncertain terms about how you feel about their performance.

‘Do they get that with a shouting and screaming match?

‘Or do they get that when you look them squarely in the eye and tell them sternly: “You won’t get away with that”?

‘Players have to realise those things aren’t acceptable.

‘Whatever led to it has to change.

‘It’s done now and we move on but I don’t want any team who represents this football club to play like that. Simple.’

Meanwhile, Pompey have completed the signing of Gavin Mahon on a one-month deal.

The 36-year-old yesterday inked the agreement and goes straight into the squad for today’s clash with Rochdale.

Whittingham said: ‘He will get about people and has good experience.

‘Gavin’s on board with what we’re trying to do.’
