Hinshelwood unimpressed despite Selsey fightback

Jake Lafferty in action for Selsey against Ringmer

Selsey battled back from two goals down to steal a point against Ringmer in division one of the Sussex League - but boss Adam Hinshelwood was angry at a below-par first-half display.

George Holah struck on 11 minutes for the visitors, who were looking for their first win in five games. But after they doubled their advantage through Ryan Macmillan on 43 minutes, Jake Lafferty struck moments before half-time to put Selsey back in it.

Robert Wimble’s equaliser with 23 minutes left kept Adam Hinshelwood’s side unbeaten in December, with Lingfield next up at home in the RUR Charity Cup this Saturday.

For the manager it’s so far so good in his aim of turning the High Street Ground into a fortress, with five of the six games this month at home. But Hinshelwood was far from pleased with the first-half showing and let his players know how he felt at the interval.

He said: “Our first-half performance didn’t warrant a win so we probably got what we deserved in the end.

“I said to the lads at half-time people had come and spent their hard-earned money just before Christmas to come and watch us, so to perform like they did was a little bit embarrassing.

“It was far from a fortress for 45 minutes. It’s not good enough to give teams two goals – it’s always going to be an uphill battle from there.

“Jake’s goal helped massively but we had enough chances in the second half to win two games. The lads had to know it wasn’t good enough. All I’ve asked for is a certain level of commitment; the quality will come after that.

“I want to show that’s not what we’re about as a club. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of those people from the first half didn’t come this week.

“I want to win every game, cup or league.”
