Own goal denies Rocks FA Cup progress at Frome

A LATE own goal by Jon Marzetti forced Bognor into an FA Cup replay with Southern League Frome.

Ben Godfrey’s fifth goal in six games put Jamie Howell’s team in front within the final 20 minutes but they were pegged back with a minute to go.

It means the sides will meet again at Nyewood Lane - on Wednesday evening.

Bognor were forced to make the long trip to Somerset without injured skipper Kane Wills. But they did so in confident mood, having won four of their past five Ryman premier games.

Bognor dominated most of the first half of the first qualifying round tie, and had most of the decent chances, with Frome restricted to very few.

In the 12th minute, a Rocks free-kick from the right led to Craig Robson’s shot being deflected for a corner, but nothing came of it.

Eight minutes later, Harvey Whyte slipped a pass to Godfrey, whose quick shot was pushed around the post by keeper Darren Chitty.

Frome’s first real chance came on 21 minutes when Matt Smith ran through and shot, but it was easily saved by Mark Zawadski.

Bognor’s best chance of the half came on 34 minutes when, following a goalmouth scramble, Robson’s fierce header crashed against the bar.

Bognor continued to dominate after the break.

They made a change two minutes into the half, with Marzetti coming on for Daryl Wollers.

A foul on Arron Hopkinson led to a free-kick from which Bognor threatened, but Robson was penalised.

Four minutes later, Whyte picked up the ball in midfield and ran through - but shot too high.

Ben Johnson replaced James Crane before Ollie Pearce led a Rocks counter-attack but shot over the bar. Pearce had another sniff but was pulled up for a foul on the keeper and on 71 minutes, a Hopkinson cross was scrambled away.

The breakthrough came on 74 minutes and it was sub Johnson who made it, going on a run and slipping a pass to Godfrey, who sidefooted home.

But a minute from time, Marzetti headed into his own net after a goalmouth scramble as he tried to clear the ball.

Subs Johnson and Terry Dodd had late chances cleared – meaning the sides must meet again at Nyewood Lane on Wednesday.

BOGNOR: Zawadski, Malins, Crane, Tuck, Axten, Robson, Hopkinson, Wollers, Godfrey, Whyte, Pearce. Subs: Sackman, Dodd, Marzetti, Johnson, Boyle.
