Two top-class second-half goals saw Pagham through to the FA Cup preliminary round with a 2-0 home win over Woodstock Sports.
Without Lee Bradshaw and Rob Wimble, there might have been worries over the side’s strength. But they brushed such fears aside with a storming second-half display.
The visitors could have taken the lead within the first minute and had a goal disallowed soon after that.
Matt Wood tested Ollie Dewey in Woodstock’s goal, while Scott Murfin headed just wide of the upright.
Scott Dormer was having a superb game at the back, clearing their lines with the assistance of Jake Hawker. The two defenders were arguably men of the match as they cleared all Woodstock threw at them.
Pagham’s Wood, Dormer and Ruben French all saw yellow, as did Woodstock’s George Blake.
Pagham were starting to pile on the pressure, Dan Martin and Josh Clack causing the visitors big problems. With Dewey having to contend with an onrushing Dan Martin, the first half ended positively for the Lions.
Two minutes after the break, Murfin struck a post, but yet another booking followed as Martin was cautioned. Then Martin’s clear run on goal was curtailed by the referee’s whistle just as he was destined to strike.
Dormer hit a shot just past the upright and Dewey did well to palm away a Pagham corner, while Clack got away with a high tackle in the area. James Binfield had to be on his toes just after the hour, the Lions keeper out sharpish to deny an inswinging Rob Welling cross.
Rob Brown made his mark having come on as sub for Luca Coleman-Carr. Making the most of a Dormer cross, Brown headed in to give the Lions a deserved lead on 68 minutes.
An even better goal followed two minutes later, Clack’s sublime strike from the right giving Dewey no chance.
This galvanised Woodstock, who had Dormer scrambling on Pagham’s line to make a decent clearance.
Martin was hacked down by Alfie Norman, the Woodstock man receiving a booking.
Brown could have doubled his tally with a shot which pinged off the post.
Pagham look forward to a trip to Canterbury City in the preliminary round on August 30.
