Pirates so close to glory in Mallorca

Nyetimber Pirates’ summer tour of Spain included them competing in the Mallorca International Cup.

The Pirates took a strong squad of 20 to the island as they looked to build on their success during the domestic season, in which they picked up a league and cup double.

New signings Johnny Miller, Perry Dante and Jon Boye all made their debuts for the Pirates and put in impressive performances throughout the tour.

Dan Cox was man of the match on day one against FC Tamil of India after scoring an impressive goal just after half-time to give the Pirates a 1-0 win.

On day two there was a tough test against The Red Lion and they soon found themselves 2-0 down. Pirates were handed a lifeline when Michael Frangou pulled one back.

Kerry Hardwell headed home on 86 minutes after a nice cross from Ryan Vevers, celebrated in bizarre fashion as all the Pirates’ shirts came off in tribute to team-mate Leroy Nichols, who has made it his celebration his over recent seasons.

Miller was in fine form on day three against Ipswich-based side Kings Head AFC after launching an impressive free-kick into the top corner to give Nyetimber another 1-0 win.

But he was later carried off after a vicious tackle which sidelined him for the rest of the tournament.

Ted Griffin and Joe Wilkins were ruled out of the final match after both picking up injuries and the Pirates crashed out of the cup after losing 2-0 to Fucon Chowe FC from Norway.
