Pompey closed their pre-season programme with a goalless draw at Gillingham.

Paul Cook’s new-look side held their League One hosts as they finetuned their preparations for next weekend’s League Two opener against Dagenham & Redbridge.

In a game lacking any major incidents, Blues fans had to wait 26 minutes to see triallist Ben Davies smack the crossbar with a wonderfully-executed free-kick that left Gills keeper Glen Morris a spectator.

At the other end, keeper Paul Jones and Matt Clarke - playing ahead of his anticipated loan deal - breathed a sigh of relief on 34 minutes when their errors went unpunished after Luke Norris failed to capitalise.

The second half proved a lot livelier but, again, with neither defence being truly tested.

Clarke had to be alert to deny Bradley Dack two minutes after the restart, before Emmanuel Osadebe saw his effort saved well by Jones two minutes later.

Pompey responded with Gareth Evans failing to make the most of Gary Roberts and Kyle Bennett setting up a counterattack.

However, it was at the other end that looked most likely to produce a goal - but Adedeji Oshilaja fluffed his lines when he headed over from point-blank range from a corner.

Substitutes Jayden Stockley and Conor Chaplin both had half chances to break the deadlock, but neither could deliver as the game finished 0-0.
