Pompey’s players are relishing their Fratton Park bow in next week’s open training session.

That is according to Mark Catlin as Paul Cook’s squad prepare to play on the newly-laid surface for the first time.

This summer there have been no home pre-season matches following on-going work on the Fratton playing surface.

As a result, all six friendlies have taken place on the road, the final encounter coming at Gillingham on Saturday.

Yet the Blues finally have the opportunity to play on home turf on Tuesday in the form of an open training session.

With doors open from 1.30pm ahead of a 2pm start, fans will also have the opportunity to watch Cook’s new-look side in action.

As for the players themselves, it is the first chance to sample Fratton Park ahead of the League Two curtain raiser against Dagenham & Redbridge at the same venue on Saturday, August 8.

Pompey’s chief executive said: ‘The idea of an open training session at Fratton Park was Paul’s as he is keen for the lads to have a run out there.

‘It will be the first time they have trained there, so a great chance for them to have a look at the pitch before the first match of the season.

‘They are really looking forward to it, especially with the fans also being present to watch. Last year’s event was a massive success.

‘It is great that supporters can come along and watch the new lads train at Fratton, while afterwards they can meet them in the Victory Lounge for autographs and photos.

‘It’s another opportunity for the players and the fans to mix and I’m looking forward to it.’

The North Stand lower will be open for supporters.
