JED WALLACE rescued Pompey – and himself – as his 90th-minute winner sealed a 1-0 win over Exeter City at Fratton Park.

The Blues top goalscorer netted his 13th of the season as the clock ticked into time added on with a cultured low finish into the bottom corner to send Fratton Park wild.

It was a remarkable recovery from the young midfielder, who had blazed a 73rd minute penalty over the crossbar after Matt Tubbs had been felled in the box.

Pompey edged the game and James Dunne smashed a piledriver against the underside of the crossbar from 30 yards as the home side pressed in the second half.

But it looked like their efforts would draw a blank, until Wallace made his late intervention.

Although Pompey had some decent spells of possession in the first half, they failed to really trouble Christy Pym in the Exeter goal.

They nearly snatched the lead in the 23rd minute when Dan Butler’s cutback found Josh Passley racing in from the right flank, but his left-footed effort clipped the top of the crossbar with the keeper beaten.

Exeter then forced Paul Jones into a double save with Tom Nichols and Liam Sercombe both trying their luck.

But that was the closest either side came to a breakthrough before the game opened up after the break.

And Wallace ensured that the groans that would have been heard were turned to cheers with his gutsy response.
