Whittingham: Same old defensive story for Pompey

Guy Whittingham rued a defensive ‘groundhog day’ as Pompey slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Walsall.

The loss at Banks’s Stadium made it 14 games without success for the Blues.

Pompey had defensive lapses to blame as Mustapha Dumbuya lost Febian Brandy for the first goal - and then played Brandy onside for Will Grigg to get the second.

Whittingham knows that is simply not good enough, and insists errors have to stop if his side are to end their dreadful run.

He said: ‘It’s groundhog day from Swindon - just 30 minutes earlier.

‘We’re in the game and have created a couple of opportunities.

‘Paul Benson had a chance where he had more time than he thought.

‘Then the lapses of concentration at the back came in again.

‘It’s not good enough. You work your socks off and then shoot yourselves in the foot.

‘But we have to put it behind us and keep working on putting it right.’
