Day two of the Goodwood May Festival today (Friday) brings a Derby hopeful into view for the Casco EBF Stallions Cocked Hat Stakes

Roger Charlton is set to put his Observational through his paces in the race. Charlton won the Derby with Quest For Fame in 1990 in his first season with a training licence. Since then he has had only one other runner in the race, and that was in 1996.

Observational will be up against four rivals for the £40,000 contest, with Richard Hannon’s Barley Mow among them.

This race has been a pointer to future stars with recent winners Rewilding (2010) and Masked Marvel (2011) going on to record Group 1 wins.

John Gosden-trained Marzocco, Signposted (Andrew Balding) and Snow Trouble (Marcus Tregonning) complete the 2014 line-up.

The May Festival ends on Saturday when a seven-race card is headlined by a pair of £40,000 listed contests for older horses, the 32Red Casino Stakes (1.50pm) over just short of ten furlongs and the 12-furlong 32Red Stakes (2.20pm).

Observer sports editor Steve Bone’s Friday tips: 220 Parsley, 250 Czech It Out, 325 Kalispell, 400 Barley Mow, 435 Desert Command, 510 Cameo Tiara, 545 Katja.

Saturday tips: 150 French Navy, 220 Pether’s Moon, 255 Supplicant, 330 Crystal Malt, 405 Bantam, 440 Aye Aye Digby, 515 Buredyma.
