IT’S the undoubted highlight of Glorious Goodwood - the Sussex Stakes.
The £300,000 Group 1 contest, these days sponsored by QIPCO and part of the British Champions’ Series, has thrown up some enthralling races down the years.
But it’s not just the list of past winners that’s illustrious. The list of horses entered for this year’s race makes impressive reading.
Last year Frankel became the first horse to win the race twice, where star names such as Canford Cliffs, Rip Van Winkle, Henrythenavigator and Rocks of Gibraltar, and those all in the 21st century, had done it just once.
This year, what a contest it promises to be once again.
The headliners look like being Dawn Approach and Toronado, who have had two great battles already this season - the latest being the St James’ Palace Stakes, when they could hardly be separated as Dawn Approach edged it in a photo finish - and are all lined up for the third instalment in the Sussex Stakes.
If that weren’t enough, Aiden O’Brien’s own Royal Ascot hero Declaration of War is in the mix, as are many other top horses.
It’s a mouthwatering prospect - and we are giving you the chance to see it for free.
The Chichester Observer has teamed up with Goodwood racecourse to offer its readers TEN pairs of tickets to the Gordon Enclosure for Sussex Stakes day - Wednesday, July 31.
To find out how to stand a chance of winning, buy this week’s (July 11) Observer.
The big race is far from being the only attraction on that day.
A programme of seven high-class contests also includes the UBS Goodwood Stakes, the Group 3 Neptune Investment Management Gordon Stakes - often a good indicator of contenders for the St Leger, the Group 2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes, the Markel Insurance Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, the British Stallion Studs Turf Club EBF Fillies’ Stakes and the Harwoods Racing Club Handicap Stakes.
Throughout the five days of the festival, more than 100,000 people will flock through the gates to enjoy the chic, relaxed and incredibly stylish atmosphere.
Widely acknowledged as the sporting and social highlight of the summer, Glorious Goodwood is a quintessentially English event, where Champagne and strawberries are in abundance.
