Italian master Marco sparks magical first Bosham win

A terrific strike from Marco Giambelardini helped Bosham claim their first win of the season.

The result was even more impressive as it came at the seemingly very tough West Humble Playing Fields – the home of Dorking Wanderers.

Having narrowly missed out on promotion last season, the Wanderers are looking towards a major push to succeed where they failed to last time around.

The Dark Blues started well, after having to get referee Neil Saxton to don a yellow bib to avoid a clash of colours.

They took a deserved lead on ten minutes as pressure finally told on the Bosham defence.

After a momentary scramble which saw new Robins keeper Nathan Kohle flap at a cross, Leroy Hyett stooped low at the back stick to nod into an empty net.

Bosham regrouped and came back fighting.

Paul Sumnall, returning from suspension, was a tower in defence and Matt Evans, back after injury, showed just what the Reds had been missing up front this season.

It took a while, but just after the half-hour Frank Anthony’s charges were level.

Evans headed a free-kick from Scott Cooper goalward and Dean Ayling nipped in unchecked to divert the ball beyond a wrongfooted John McBride in the Wanderers goal.

Bosham asserted themselves well again in the second half.

Dorking found it frustrating as several good chances went begging.

Kohle was showing a significant improvement in confidence in his abilities and pulled off a couple of smart saves to keep the scores level.

The Robins then took advantage of the Dark Blues’ wastefulness in front of goal with a memorable strike.

Giambelardini lashed in a sparkling 25-yarder which even the fully-committed McBride could not touch to put the Reds ahead for the first time.

And a little later Evans headed home from a Cooper corner with one of those strikes you just don’t save.

Frustrations boiled over for Dorking after that and several players found their way into the referee’s notebook.

With five minutes left on the clock Lee Smith blasted home from six yards to give the hosts hope after Bosham failed to avert the danger.

It gave the Robins a tantalising final few minutes to try to hang on for the win.

This they did and the relief along with great celebration were a joy to behold at the final whistle.

The result was certainly deserved and will hopefully see Bosham start a transition up the table in coming weeks now the winning formula has been found.

Bosham: Kohle, Sumnall, T Evans, Payne, Pointing, Hunt, Hartley, Cooper, M Evans, Ayling, Giambelardini.

Subs: Erskine, Andrews, O’Boyle.
