The Zone Final of the Top Club Competition between Pagham and Chichester ladies was played at Pagham. Chichester won on three out of four disciplines to get through with a 75-71 victory.

Playing in the zone finals of both the County Double Rink, Chichester also reached the final.

Chichester hosted Aldingbourne in the C&M League and took all the points after winning on both rinks.

In the semi-final of the Sussex Double Fours Abergavenny Cup competition, holders Chichester beat White Rock BC of Hastings by five shots.

Chichester A were always in control of their West Sussex League division-one match at home to Crablands and with wins on all four rinks they picked up the maximum ten points.

Chichester B entertained Aldingbourne in their West Sussex League third-division match and with two good wins and two narrow defeats they secured six points.

Chichester B were ahead in their away West Sussex League division-three game, but the game slipped away from them over the last two ends and Chichester returned with four points.

Chichester were edged out of the Midhurst Cup in a semi-final defeat to Midhurst. Chichester’s home and away teams both lost by eight shots giving Midhurst overall victory by 16 shots.

On a hot afternoon, Witterings men entertained Norfolk. The result was a disappointment after Witterings lost heavily on one rink. The other game was a draw.

Southbourne had a splendid win at home against Crablands in West Sussex division one. Southbourne won on all four rinks and overall by 81 shots to earn ten points.

Southbourne had a nice home win against Pulborough in division one of the BM mixed triples league. Southbourne won on both rinks and overall by 28 shots to earn six points.

Southbourne top the table with 34 points and have a game in hand over second-placed Pulborough on 32.

Southbourne had a lovely win at Fishbourne in division one of the BM mixed triples league. Southbourne won on both rinks and overall by 17 shots to earn six points.

CRABLANDS

Crablands ladies earned six points in the heat at Lancing.

Scores: C Lewendon, M Bateman, S Jones and C Bowles won 40-11; G Humphreys, M Back, V Foyle and C Ruler won 24-13.

At home against Pagham, Crablands again took maximum points.

Scores: V Tyrrell, V Foyle, M Back and C Ruler won 22-14; C Lewendon, J Adams, S Jones and C Bowles won 18-12.

Three Crablands triples travelled to Worthing Beach House Park for the benevolent triples with the trio of C Lewendon, S Jones and C Bowles winning twice to go forward to the quarter, semi and final at Henfield on August 23.

Best of luck to them and commiserations to E Sadler, M Bateman and M Back and P Terry, V Foyle and J Adams.

Crablands visited RAFA for a friendly and won 70-68.

At West Dean Gardens, the home team won on two rinks and drew on the other.

Haslemere won this close match by taking two of the three rinks.

BOGNOR

Bognor played Headley in the semi-final of the Midhurst Cup, and despite losing on both rinks at home, they won on both rinks away with a final score of 65-61. They play the hosts Midhurst in the final on August 6.

Bognor played Arundel in a mixed friendly, losing on three rinks and winning one but losing 93-66.

Bognor ladies played Arundel ladies in a C&M League division-one game. They won on both rinks 48-28 and scored six points.

Scores: Lyn Carthew, Beryl Charlesworth, Anne Parry and Jean Spiers won 23-20; Jean Taylor, Penny Jones, Barbara Reardon and Margaret Phillips won 25-8.

Bognor men’s B team played Middleton in the West Sussex League division three. John Edwards’ rink were 13-1 down at nine ends and had a great comeback to draw. Bognor won on the other three rinks for a 90-66 win and nine points.

PAGHAM

A men’s league game at home to Southbourne in division one of the West Sussex League was lost 104-54.

Southbourne won on all four rinks and overall by 50 shots to earn ten points. Southbourne are currently second in the league, 11 points behind Tarring Priory ‘A’, but with 2 games in hand.

Two Pagham mixed triples favced The Beavers partially-sighted bowlers. In warm sunshine, the Beavers won.

Four mixed triples faced Little Spain but Pagham lost87-46.

Two mixed triples faced Witterings in the BM League, winning 34-30 for four points.

MIDDLETON

Middleton 30 Storrington 39

Middleton ladies, playing in a C&M League second-division fixture, lost their season’s unbeaten record to low-placed Storrington - but did pick up two points towards their goal of promotion.

Scores: Maureen Bravington, Linda Hills, Jane Nurse, Mary Wootten won 22-9; Sandra Shere, Irene Smith, Pat Eccles, Rosemary Gregory lost 30-8. Middleton 2pts, Storrington 4pts.

Middleton 66 Bognor B 90

Playing at home to Bognor B in the West Sussex Bowls League, Middleton men were leading in two games with just one end to play in each. But Bognor showed why they are unbeaten this season by winning one of these games and drawing the other.

Middleton 39 Goring Manor 56

This mixed-trips friendly was the first time Middleton had played Goring Manor, the club created from the merger of West Tarring and Field Place.

MIDHURST

Cranleigh 42 (1pt) Midhurst 51 (4pts)

In the Three Counties League, by winning on two rinks Midhurst won overall by nine shots to go third in division one.

Scores: Catherine Dixon, Margaret Sole and Dave King won 20-11; Stuart Largan, Paul Chuter & Gerald Dixon won 18-16; Howard Seymour, Malcolm Hutchings & Terry Berry lost 15-13.

Haslemere Ladies 43 Midhurst Ladies 48

Midhurst ladies visited Haslemere and won overall by five shots.

Scores: Stella Tait, Jean Adams & Ann Chuter lost 13-11; C Bandell, Lilly Kingswell & Margaret Sole won 21-9; Sarah Porter, Delphine Clark & Marjorie Hayward won 14-13.

PETWORTH

Petworth enjoyed a friendly and a league game but results did not go their way.

A friendly mixed triples team travelled to Graffham and had trouble adjusting to the heavy grass rink, so different from Petworth’s home carpet.

Scores: Jean Brown, Geoff Harris and Jim Palmer lost 18-12; Carol Hall, Barry Stanton and Bill Bryder lost 22-12; Kathy Williams, Stan Entikcnap and Selwyn Hall lost 21-13.

On Saturday Bognor, the top league team, beat Petworth on three rinks out of four and overall by 83-57. Bognor took eight points, Petworth two.

FITTLEWORTH

A triples competition was the format for the Fines Shield.

Winners were Arthur Ellcome, Sue Judd and Sheila Allen. Runners-up were Nancy Goodyer, Mike Ryan and Bernard Adsett.

Joan Fines donated a nice selection of raffle prizes, the proceeds going to the club.
