ST GERARDS Boxing Club took ever-improving Mwenya Chisanga to Gosport naval base HMS Sultan for their annual big bash versus HMS Collingwood.

Chisanga was up against naval airman Roberts from Yeovil and both weighed in at 64.7kg - just outside of the light-welterweight division.

Roberts had greater experience, with more winning contests under his belt, and, like Chisanga, only one loss on points, so it was another good test for the Chichester prospect, who has been improving with each contest.

Coach Gareth Ferguson said: “The first round was a corker. Mwenya caught Roberts with a big overhand right and he was given a standing eight count by the referee, which lasted about 18 seconds - which surprised us.

“Mwenya caught him shortly afterwards with another big shot and he received another count from the referee. Roberts barely managed to survive the first round and at the bell dejectedly returned to his own corner.”

Coach Jon Mills added: “We told him to carry on with the same tactics and he did just that, winning the second very comfortably with Roberts doing everything to avoid his big power shots.

“The third round was much the same and the local crowd were loving it, supporting Mwenya with loud applause and cheers. At the final bell he was awarded a unanimous decision by all three judges present.”

Ferguson said: “It was a magical night with 650 supporters in attendance. We had the national anthem and a Royal Naval band playing drums. We were raising much-needed money to support some of our forces charities, including the Royal Marines.

“It was such a pleasure to be part of this amazing event and Mwenya’s win made it all the more pleasurable.

St Gerards host their annual black-tie boxing show on Saturday, January 25, at Chichester College.
