Another county trophy for Chichester BC tops our latest round-up from around the bowling greens, while there’s also news from all the other local clubs.

A total of 28 teams from around the south converged on Chichester for their 23rd annual open tournament sponsored by Reynolds.

CHICHESTER

Chichester 43 Norfolk 42

In a pulsating finish to a final worthy of any competition, Chichester were the winners by one shot overall on the very last end against Norfolk BC in the Sussex county Double Fours competition for the Abergavenny Cup.

Chichester have now won this prestigious trophy four times in the past five years, a feat not accomplished by any other club in Sussex since its inception more than 50 years ago – a quite remarkable achievement.

Scores: Malcolm Bowden, David Schofield, Simon Tooley, Mick Page (skip) won 25-15; Kevin Ball, Derek Leach, Clive Keedwell, Clive Benham (skip) lost 27-18.

A total of 28 teams from around the south converged on Chichester for their 23rd annual open tournament sponsored by Reynolds.

In group one after each team had played three games there were three on maximum points - Hedge End, Balls Out and Oddballs. Oddballs drew their last game to go into the play-off and Hedge end won their last game to progress to the final.

In group two The Roofers were on six points with the City Club on five.

In the play-off for third and fourth City Club won 13-9. In the final the Roofers (G Guy, M Leesen, M Wake, G Starks) won beat Hedge End (P Emery, M Nash, J Firth, C Higgins) 9-3.

Middleton 77 Chichester B 95

Chichester B produced a fine performance over the second half of their West Sussex League third-division match away to Middleton to secure eight points from an 18-shot victory.

Chichester A 93 Southbourne 67

Chichester A held off a late challenge from Southbourne to take the maximum ten points in their home game in the West Sussex League.

Chichester A 83 Tarring Priory A 62

Chichester A dug deep over the last few ends to eke out a 21-shot win, picking up eight points, in their West Sussex League division-one match at home to the leaders and title holders.

Worthing Pavilion C 80 Chichester A 81

In their West Sussex Bowls League first-division match away to Worthing, Chichester A produced a late fightback to win by just one shot, taking eight points.

Scores: Les Etherington, G Buckle, C Keedwell, M Bonnar (skip) won 20-15; P Whale, M Lewis, B Talmage, D Schofield (skip) lost 25-10; G Jackson, S Meyer, B Butler, T Sayers (skip) won 27-20; K Ball, T Hardgrove, P Green, D Leach (skip) won 24-20.

Chichester 109 Fishbourne 38

Chichester entertained Fishbourne in a mixed friendly and had a comfortable victory.

Scores: G Buckle, V Pickering, M Lewis (skip) won 32-4; I Taylor, T Gaffney, P Green (skip) won 22-16; A Hulbert, K Burt, P White (skip) won 21-15; C Hulbert, S Baverstock, K Ball (skip) won 34-3.

Chichester 43 Lancing 35

Chichester took four points from their trip to Lancing in the C&M League after winning on one rink and losing on the other.

Scores: Chris Hobbs, Mary Potter, Wendy Adams & Betty Spicer won 31-9; Jean Hole, Bridget Collins, Denise Latter & April Janman lost 26-12.

Congratulations go to Debbie Hogg and Jean Hole on reaching the county final of the Unbadged Trixie Pairs. Debbie has also reached the final of the County Unbadged Singles despite losing both finals 18-14 and 21-15.

Both players enjoyed the experience of competing in their first county finals weekend.

FISHBOURNE

Fishbourne reached the semi-final of the Holbrook Cup with a hard-fought victory against Rogate with two of the three triples resulting in drawn games, but a good win for the Tony Bleach trio giving Fishbourne the win. They play Hotham for a spot in the final.

Scores: Wendy White, Audrey Saunders and Bernard Wallsgove drew 19-19, Chris Lankshear, Alan Banham and Tony Bleach won 28-11, Jim Lankshear, Brian Henham and Tony White drew 18-18.

Fishbourne played away to Storrington in a new fixture and lost 96-72, although each side shared the four triples.

Scores: Sue Lewis, Kirk Hardman and Bernard Wallsgrove won 24-20, Ken Ridley, Alan Marsh and Bill Cooper won 21-17, Wendy Cooper, Bernard Pack and Lionel Kneale lost 23-15, Janet Pack,Ted Badger and Gordon Summers lost 36-12.

Away to Portsmouth Gas Social, Fishbourne won 131-67.

Scores: Wendy White, Barry Denny and Jim Lankshear drew 14-14, Sonia Denny,Dave McTurk and Bernard Wallsgrove won 27-9, Ken Ridley, Bernard Pack and Mick Howard lost 16-12, Caroline Martin,Gordon Summers and Alan Banham won 23-11, Chris Lankshear, Guest and Martin Reed won 36-8, Alan Marsh, Guest and Tony White won 19-9.

Fishbourne drew 65-65 with Arundel.

Scores: Ken Ridley, Sonia Denny and Bill Cooper lost 20-15, Wendy Cooper, Rob Stone and Mick Howard won 17-12, Janet Pack, Jean Conway and Tony Bleach won 24-10, Brenda Payne, Bernard Pack and Barry Denny lost 23-9.

In the BM League, Fishbourne lost 42-25 to Southbourne.

Scores: Chris Lankshear, Tony Bleach and Peter Winter lost 26-11, Bill Cooper, Audrey Saunders and Bernard Wallsgrove lost 16-14.

Fishbourne enjoyed a 73-58 win over Witterings. Highlight of this game was a hotshot of all nine available by the trio of Chris Lankshear, Sue Lewis and Alan Marsh.

Scores: Janet Pack, Keith Fancy and Bill Cooper won 16-12, Sheila Hill, Bernard Pack and Tony Bleach lost 12-11, Ken Ridley, Wendy Dean and Jim Lankshear drew 19-19, Sue Lewis,Chris Lankshear and Alan Marsh won 27-15.

Playing away at Midhurst in a four-triples match, Fishbourne lost 82-58 despite losing on only one rink. A heavy loss on rink two gave the game to Midhurst.

Southbourne played an enjoyable mixed triples friendly at home to Little Spain. Southbourne won on 2 rinks and lost on one.

CRABLANDS

Crablands played Pagham and achieved a welcome five points.

Scores: L Lewendon, J Saunders, J Cornwell and T Dade won 23-18; J Tyrrell, A Humphreys, N Reynolds and M Heasman won 20-19; D Terry, F Carrie, D Clayey and R Humphrey drew 20-20; A Blyth, P Blackman, M Campbell and A Bateman lost 25-14.

Crablands 44 Southbourne 17

In the BM League, Crablands beat Southbourne at home to gain the six points on offer.

Scores: P Osborn, N Reynolds and J Tyrrell won 24-5; D Jonas, V Tyrrell and J Cornwell won 20-12.

The club’s internal drawn mixed triples was played to final stage this weekend – the finalists are G and A Humphreys with B Berry to play C Smith, N. Reynolds and C Ruler.

BOGNOR

Bognor played holders Chichester in the PC Cup – they won on one rink but lost 95-65.

In the semi final Chichester will be away to Norfolk BC.

Scores: Ben Stabler, Geoff Kendall, Richard Robinson and John Whitfield lost 18-13 to Mike Lewis, Tony Hardgrove, Simon Tooley, Mick Page (skip); Bob Daley, Chris Witt, Tony Arnold and Arthur Richardson lost 26-21 to Kevin Ball, Stuart Meyer, Brian Butler, Tony Sayers (skip); Rod Lincoln, Norman Burchfell, Gerry Stevens and Tommy Gaskin lost 33-12 to Les Etherington, Derek Leach, Clive Keedwell, Matt Bonnar; David Jackson, Ned Waddock, Derek Ford and Ron Gardner beat Ian Linfield, Nigel Dearman, Brian Talmage, David Schofield (skip) 19-18.

In the West Sussex League division three, Bognor B played East Preston B. They won on three rinks and by 87-68, scoring eight points.

Scores: Rod Lincoln, Chris Witt, Bob Hey and John Whitfield lost 18-16; George Dunham, Phil Hasler, Pat Phillips and John Edwards won 27-18; Geoff Cook, Geoff Kendall, Richard Robinson and Dave Matkins won 18-15; Ben Stabler, Norman Burchfell, Keith Graham and Mike Philpot won 26-17.

They also played Petworth in a division-three game, winning on three rinks and losing on one for a 119-68 victory and eight points. Petworth were a player short on three rinks.

In a friendly against Tarring Priory, Bognor men won on one rink but lost overall 82-61.

Scores: George Dunham, Rod Lincoln, Chris Witt and Gerry Stevens lost 19-11; Ray Philpott, Phil Hasler, John Christensen and Alan Hall lost 26-21; Ben Stabler, Simon Webster, J Upton (TP) and Geoff Cook lost 22-11; Bryan Harvey, Alan Lewis, Keith Graham and David Jackson won 18-15.

In a mixed friendly against Godalming, Bognor lost on all rinks and by 107-51.

Scores: Jenny Gibson, George Dunham, Janet Whitfield and John Edwards lost 22-19; Ray Philpott, Dicky Dalton, Christine Preston and John Whitfield lost 27-11; Edna Keywood, John Christensen, Penny Jones and Gerry Stevens lost 28-10; Jane Colebrook-Taylor, Pauline White, Christine Dunham and Geoff Cook lost 30-11.

Bognor ladies played Norfolk ladies in a friendly and won on two rinks to secure a 64-53 victory.

Scores: Jane Colebrook-Taylor, Christine Dunham, Penny Jones and Margaret Phillips lost 22-15; Edna Keywood, Beryl Charlesworth, Anne Parry and Jean Spiers won 24-19; Hannah Down, Jenny Gibson, Janet Whitfield and Barbara Reardon won 25-12.

ALDINGBOURNE

Aldingbourne Bowls Club celebrated 25 years of bowling at their Oliver’s Meadows ground combined with a tribute to the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The dress code of red, white and blue added to a relaxed atmosphere enjoyed by players and guests alike.

A fun competition of short jack, spot jack and full length bowls was won on shot difference by Derek Page, Maureen Grey, and Glyn Ball.

A warm welcome was given to the founder members John and Hilda Phillips, who made the long journey up from the west country.

A ladies’ two-rink league match away to Arundel resulted in a 16-16 draw on one rink and a 19-14 loss on the other.

Scores: E Taylor, A Howson, J Robini, L Hathaway lost 19-14; E Fitch, H Lewis, J Dace, J Whetstone drew 16-16.

A four-rink friendly against Arundel produced two wins, one draw and one loss. Aldingbourne won 63-59.

Away to Chichester in a four-rink men’s league match, Aldingbourne won on two rinks and lost on two, going down 84-59. Aldingbourne took four points out of ten against a strong Chi team.

The ladies’ teams in their two-rink league match with Chi lost on both rinks.

Capitulation by Pulborough BC at 11 ends saw Aldingbourne men’s team through to the semi-finals of the PC Cup, winning 85-17.

In their Three Counties League match, although winning on two of the three rinks, Midhurst lost by two shots.

The John Sadler Cup is a charity fun day and the proceeds go to the Impaired Vision charity. Twenty-six members took part and raised £245.

The four-ends final for the cup was won by Roger Brindel, Ann Chuter, Roy Ralph and Phil Kingswell (skip) beating June Barnard, Basil Osbourne, Corina Pearce, and Margaret Sole (skip) 5-2.

* This Saturday, Midhurst will host the Midhurst Cup final on their June Lane green (2.30pm). It is between Bognor and Midhurst and it is the first time Midhurst have reached their own final since 1994, when they won it.

PETWORTH

Petworth have had a busy week of bowling – they won a mixed triples against Fittleworth on their home carpet, but found it less straightforward away in the Men’s League on grass to East Preston and Bognor.

Scores: Simon Herber, Tessa Clegg, Bernard Adsett drew 18-18; Mike Ryan, David Luxford, Gina Barnfield won 16-1; Arthur Ellcome, Colin Long, Sue Judd won 20-9.

The Fittleworth Cup was won by Arthur Ellcome, Sue Judd and Gina Barnfield with six points and a plus-16 shot difference.

Runners-up on countback on shots were Simon Herbert, Mike Ryan and David Luxford.
