Dragon Flyers trampolinists were among 290 children from top clubs in the south participating in a regional graded competition held at Farnborough Leisure Centre.
Despite the extremely high standard shown by the opposition and the numbers involved, the club came away with 13 medals and several of their members qualifying for upgrades within the British Gymnastics grading structure.
Flyers’ youngest member Phillipe Newton Young (U9 Boys G), Izzy Hauxwell (U9 Girls G) and Billy Grubb (U11 Boys G) outshone their competitors with stunning routines to take the first three gold medals of the day.
Florence Dempster simply outclassed her rivals in the O15 Girls G, finishing 1.5 points ahead in a group where all the top 10 girls qualified for upgrades to level F. Her terrific score not only captured individual gold but helped secure team gold with club-mates Naomi Coleman and Molly Grubb and provided Dempster with the option to leapfrog into grade E.
Silver medals went to James Smith for one of his best performances in U15 Boys G, Giedrius Krymcevas for a polished display in O15 Boys F and solid performances all round from U11 Girls G A team of Nicole Bergmann, Alice Chapman, Anya Johnston and Eleanor Morton. In the same category, the Dragon Flyers B team of Sasha Jenkins, Phoebe Mahoney and Jessica Lyne finished fourth in their first regional competition.
Owain Wilson (U13 Boys G) and Lee Burgess (O15 Boys G) both finished a respectable fifth in their first regional event.
Meanwhile, young James Porter achieved his best ever score in sixth place having just moved into grade F, bouncing in a much wider age group of U15 Boys.
Other excellent performances came from Matilda Raworth (U13 Girls G), Charlotte Taylor (U13 Girls F) and Natalie Pullen (O15 Girls F), with both Pullen and Taylor just falling short of a qualifying score.
Besides Dempster’s shining success, other Dragon Flyers qualifying to higher grades were Billy Grubb, Newton-Young, Coleman and Krymcevas.
This puts both Dempster and Krymcevas in the elite end of the regional grades and one step away from national competition. Flyers coaches are confident that at least one of these will reach level D within 2011, to jump alongside club-mate and assistant coach Emily Hunt.
