A grey morning with a strong south-easterly wind gusting force five to six greeted competitors for races nine and ten of Dell Quay SC’s Frostbite series.

In the first race, Martyn Jones in his Laser Radial led the fleet off the line and round the first mark with Solo sailor Bill Dawber in hot pursuit.

An exciting tight reach followed by a gybe and a long broad reach led to several capsizes as the spinnaker-equipped boats struggled with the strong gusts.

In the end, first over the line was Warwick Hoddy and John Denyer in their 2000 followed by Jones and Dawber.

Results after the handicap calculations had been applied were: Dawber (Solo) in first place, Jones (Laser Radial) second and Hoddy and Denyer (2000) third.

In the second race, a large wind shift at the start favoured those racers who had started at the clubhouse end of the line, leaving Dawber trailing mid-fleet at the first mark.

This time the leading pack of fast spinnaker boats managed to hold on to the gusts without capsizing and led round the course, but Jones was close behind, taking first place after handicap calculations.

Second was secured by Hoddy and Denyer (2000) leaving Dawber (Solo) in third place.

Dawber’s win in race nine puts him firmly on course to win the series, with Malcolm Buchanan (Solo) second, followed closely by Mike Fitzgerald and Tim Dormer (2000).

The series - open to all - continues with races 11 and 12 on Saturday, February 15 from 10.40am.
