THIRTY members of Chichester Olympic Gymnastic Club travelled to the annual Sussex Floor and Vault competition – and flew the flag for the club superbly.
Fourteen clubs from across East and West Sussex entered, with their sights set on the prospect of claiming the coveted ‘county champion’ trophy.
In all, 293 gymnasts entered five rounds of fierce competition.
In round one there was fine gymnastics from Chichester’s Abigail Robins, Hannah Anwyl, Abbie Jefford, Poppy Pattinson, Eleanor Powell and Holly Trinder.
Round two saw some of the older girls competing at intermediate level. The Chichester girls put on another commendable performance, with Gemma Waters collecting the 15-plus intermediate girls’ gold medal and county champion trophy, while team-mate Olivia Gilyead joined her on the podium with the silver.
The 12-14 intermediate category featured Juliet Howes, Charlie Jefford and Louisa Raby
For round three, the Chichester gymnasts were off to a flying start again with Laura Docherty, Lili Terry, Emilie Pigden and Rosie Whitaker scoring highly in the eight-nine intermediate girls. Emilie collected gold and the second county champion trophy of the day.
Round four started to show the advanced level gymnasts who perform specialist floor routines choreographed to music.
Ellie Shaw collected silver in the ten-11 advanced girls’ section, with very high marks from team members Jazmine Goddings, Kirstyn Green and Stella West.
In the last of the novice categories, Nelly Mathura, Madeline Gladwell and Stephanie Thauerer impressed everyone with their routines.
Round five brought out Chichester’s big guns in the senior advanced levels. Ella Holden, Charlie Kitchen, Harriet Whitaker, Sophia Froud and Jordan Kitchen competed in the 12-14 advanced girls, demonstrating very impressive vaulting and highly-refined floor routines. Jordan’s vault was described as awesome and she collected gold and the third county champion trophy of the day.
The 15-plus advanced girls’ group brought more awards for Chichester, with Katie Hall collecting gold and the fourth champion trophy. Team-mate Mylene Frankfort picked up silver.
The gymnasts compete in the Naomi Stamp Memorial Competition at the end of March at their new home, Chichester High School for Boys.
