Liss Runners organised the Harting Trail - a new race to replace the discontinued Milland Valley trail race.
The ten-mile multi-terrain, downland route was set to the south-west of the village of South Harting.
The route had a steep first hill, a long hill from the half way to 6 and a half miles and a long downhill finish, with the rest undulating over drives, tracks and paths of fields and woods.
There was a clear winner in Denmead Strider Julian Manning. He took the lead after the first hill and maintained this to finish in 58.29min. Almost in sight was second-placed Hugh Aggleton from Cardiff, finishing just over a minute behind. Victory AC runner Daniel Bailey took third.
For the ladies there was a great run by Chichester Runner Fay Cripps to take first lady, first veteran lady and 23rd overall in 1.10.40. She was closely followed by Lucy Zirbser of Sandhurst Joggers with Jo Hesketh a further two minutes back. Senior ladies’ second and third places were taken by Jennifer Bradley and Melissa Panter.
For the veteran men, Tony Randall came first with Chris Chambers in second and Mark Eaton third. Super veteran category was won by Tony Conway with Phil Guest second.
After Cripps, second and third veteran ladies’ winners were Hesketh and Donna Reid. Joanna Curtis and Marion Wicks took first and second in the ladies’ super veteran category.
The race was a great success with 227 finishers. Liss Runners will be looking to repeat the event next year but may have to tweak the route to avoid a horse field crossing point that caused a problem near to the start of the race.
Liss Runners thanked the South Harting Sports Field Committee for allowing use of their field and the pavilion.
