BOGNOR youngster Ryan Darwen is bidding for table tennis success at national level.

The 11-year-old St Mary’s RC Primary School pupil will represent West Sussex when more than 300 players from 50 counties gather in Doncaster this Saturday (April 20) for the finals of the 2013 Butterfly schools’ individual table tennis championships.

Competitions are held at under-11, 13, 16 and 19 levels for both boys and girls. All schools, primary and secondary are eligible to enter players in the county rounds in order to qualify for these finals.

This is the largest one-day event in the table tennis calendar in England.

Following these championships, the English Schools’ Table Tennis Association will select representative teams to play in the invitation international to be held in June with teams from England, Guernsey, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Scotland and Wales all competing.

Ryan joined Bognor Table Tennis club only in late 2011 but took to the sport straight away. His coach Mateausz Sadlowski is a great inspiration to him and he has already made his Sussex debut.
