Plans for a new footbridge across the A27 at the Hunston roundabout have been unveiled.
It has been commissioned by the Highways Agency (HA) to improve safety for people crossing the road, who at the moment have to cross through four gaps in the central reservation.

The £2m project will take four months to complete and will start in March next year.

Spokesman for the HA Peter O'Connor said options would be looked at to protect the privacy of those living in Whyke Close which backs on to the northern side of the A27.

"We appreciate the bridge as it stands is 13 metres off the road which is quite a substantial height," he said.

"We will look at it to see what the best option is, to plant trees or to have some other kind of screening to protect the line of sight.

"We believe there is a need for the bridge on the grounds of safety and connecting Hunston."

The bridge will connect the footpath on the eastbound carriageway with the westbound side and once built the four crossing points between the barriers will be closed up.

Whyke Close resident Lin Agostinelli said the bridge should be built further to the west along the A27 by the allotments where there are no houses to be looked over.

"There's nothing we can do about it," she said. "They were just saying we're going to do it and that's it. I can't understand why it won't be moved 50 yards.

"Why are they wanting to build the bridge here, not 50 yards down the road where there's no housing? If they have to build one, why not put it there?"

The Chichester Access Group were consulted on the project. To make it easier to use for those in wheelchairs, or parents with pushchairs, there will be flat landing areas halfway up each ramp.

Chairman of the group Barbara Teasdale said: "We are very pleased to be involved. It will make it extremely easy to get from the other side of the road to this side of the road."

Detailed information about possible road closures for when the final parts of the bridge are lifted into place will be confirmed nearer the time.
