A GIANT of local politics in Arun and Worthing has been honoured for his decades of public service.
David Hill, 82, was mayor of Worthing, leader of Worthing Borough Council and chairman of Arun District Council during a political career which began in 1962.

He has become just the third person in living memory to be awarded the freedom of Ferring, where he served on the parish council for 30 years.

"This, to me, is a very great honour," said Mr Hill.

"For me it is the icing on the cake and a fitting reward to mark the end of my local government career."

50 years of work

Ferring Parish Council chairman Bryan McCansh read a short citation to Mr Hill before presenting him with a framed certificate detailing his work in local politics over five decades.

Mr McCansh added: "He will be sadly missed because he has got a wonderful brain on him.

"I miss his advice and guidance.

"It's delightful to be able to give him this award because if anyone deserves it, David does.

"It's really a very rare award indeed."

Mary Hill, David's wife of almost 57 years, said her husband "thoroughly enjoyed" his political career.
