A PLUMBER who punched a man unconscious at a Worthing taxi rank has been sentenced in court for the "dreadful incident".
Samuel Campbell, of Belsize Road, Worthing, had pleaded not guilty to grievous bodily harm at Chichester Crown Court but was found guilty after a trial.

During sentencing Judge Robert Fraser described the attack as a "dreadful incident" which had caused his victim "very nasty injuries".

He sentenced 30-year-old Campbell to 24 weeks' imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

He was also ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work and a three-month curfew for Fridays and Saturdays was imposed.

The jury had heard that he walked to meet a friend at the taxi rank by the clock tower in Chapel Road on August 18, 2007, when he attacked a 55-year-old man.

The judge added: "I have no doubt this wouldn't have happened if you hadn't drunk so much that evening."

He did note that Campbell had reduced his drinking since the incident and acknowledged his role as a carer for his half-sister, who has learning difficulties.

But Judge Fraser added: "This was an entirely unprovoked attack."
