“Knocking on hundreds of doors, I learnt that pretty much the only factor that was undermining voter faith in the Conservatives, and Labour as it happens, was the performance of the national leaderships.
“There was genuine anger on the doors, with the Conservatives being blamed for calling the referendum, and Labour and The Conservatives for failing to deliver the result.
“To have remained as the Conservative group leader, would have meant having faith in the current Conservative Government’s handling of Brexit: I haven’t.”
