Southampton: ballet and parody meet in the middle!

Billed as the funniest night you’ll ever have at the ballet, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo perform at Southampton’s Mayflower on October 9 and 10.

Their fans call them simply The Trocks.

Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts, they offer a playful, entertaining view of classical ballet in parody form.

As Robert Carter, a member of the troupe for the past 20 years, says: “It’s basically about performing dance from a different point of view. Some of the ballets are well known. Some are quite obscure. We go back into past history for some pieces that have never been seen anywhere in the west for a long time. It’s about hankering back to a time when ballet was popular in lots of ways that football is now and didn’t used to be. Somewhere along the way, the tables were turned and the sports took over, and now I find it fascinating that a lot of people have not been to ballet. The trouble is ballet has got a reputation for being accessible only at a certain level, and people don’t understand they can really have fun. We want everyone to learn about it - and we do that by sending it up! There are a lot of people that don’t go to the ballet because they think it is all staid and rigid and because they think it belongs to the upper classes. We try to put that right.

“We are very well received wherever we travel in the world, and for a lot of people we are getting the message across. The humour is an important part of it. Everyone likes to laugh! Everyone likes to combine beautiful things with laughter! That’s why the show appeals to so many different people from so many different backgrounds and so many different ages.”
