Steyning Festival enters final weekend

The Steyning Festival sashays its carnivalesque way to a climactic finale this weekend.

Spokesman Calum Chace said: “On the final day, Sunday 5th, we’ll be celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday with a day of traditional Sussex food, drink and activities. Dress up in Sussex style – or Brazilian, if you prefer – and write a poem (max 8 lines). We’ll send the best one to Her Majesty. That evening we will bring the Festival to a roof-raising close with a sing-along to the other Queen.

“It has been the biggest and the best Steyning Festival ever, and in fact we understand that it is now the biggest Festival in the country run entirely by volunteers. The Big Top has been a huge success, and it seems to have moved the whole Festival up a gear.

“While the gorgeous Hemsley Sisters’ author supper and the legendary Copper Family Show are all sold out now, there are still places available for some of the final great entertainments. On the evening of Friday 3rd the Grammar school plays host to Sunny Ormonde, who plays Lillian in The Archers, and brings Philip Larkin to life with help from some friends, entertaining us with his poetry, his love of jazz and women! Earlier that day there is a talk on the impact of artificial intelligence on education – again, appropriately enough, at the school.

“The following day there are two silent discos in the Festival Big Top – one (from 5 to 7.30pm) for under-18s and one (from 8 to 11pm) for over-18s. These should be great fun, whether you’re dancing or watching. One thing that Steyning has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt this past fortnight is that it has a lively sense of fun.”

There are probably one or two surprises tucked up the organisers’ sleeves, so keep an eye out for our friends from Rio de Janeiro and other merrymakers. Rumour has it that the Farmer’s Market will be an even more interesting place to be than usual at certain times on Saturday morning!

“You can keep up to date with the Festival on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/SteyningFestival/timeline, and Twitter at @Steyning_Fest.”
